Melissa Samuel was born and raised in San Jose, California but has called Louisiana home for the last 15 years. Melissa is married to Lenny Samuel, and together they have four "crazy yet wonderful children," Madison (17), Jackson (15), Luke (15) and Brianna (13).
In her "real life" she is an attorney with the Kullman Firm, where she represents employers in connection with all types of labor and employment matters. Melissa says there is never a dull moment!
When asked why she tris, Melissa explained "About 11 years ago I was overweight, unhealthy, unhappy, and knew I needed to make a change, so I signed up for a triathlon to challenge myself and hopefully get in shape. Over 50 races and two Ironman finishes later, I am passionate about triathlon because I have seen it change my own life and lives of countless friends, acquaintances and even total strangers. I took that passion and began to channel it into RKF about 7 years ago as a volunteer, and for the past 4 years as a Board member and race director."
Melissa says Louisiana Triathlon is her favorite race. "It's local. It's an RKF event. And it is a fabulous sprint with a cool theme every year. It is the best!"
Melissa says the one piece of her gear she can't live without is her Garmin 935. "I wear it nonstop and am a data junkie."
Melissa shared that she finds inspiration in Rocketkidz and Rocketchix. "From the littlest triathletes who have such unbridled joy, to the inspiring women of Rocketchix who are changing their lives and the lives of those around them, I am so lucky to get to be a part of that awesomeness."
What's your favorite quote/mantra? It's one I stole from Lenny, "you get what you get and you don't throw a fit" -- I try to remember that when training, racing or life just don't go as planned. Take the day you get keep moving forward!!
